Yet, many young people in underserved communities still face barriers to accessing opportunities in the digital economy. At Women Leadership Social Empowerment, we are committed to closing this gap by equipping youth with foundational digital skills that enable participation, growth, and opportunity.
Building Strong Foundations in Digital Skills
Our core training program focuses on end-user computing, providing participants with essential, practical skills needed in everyday life and the workplace. This includes modules such as ICT fundamentals, Microsoft Office applications, email communication, and effective internet usage. These competencies form the backbone of digital literacy and are critical for improving employability and productivity.
While we continue to strengthen these foundational offerings, we recognize the growing demand for more advanced and competitive digital skills such as coding and software development. Although we are not yet positioned to deliver these specialized programs independently, we remain committed to creating pathways that expose our participants to these opportunities.
A Powerful Partnership for Digital Inclusion
When the opportunity arose to collaborate with WeThinkCode_, we embraced it as a way to expand access and inspire the youth in our communities of Mayfield and Etwatwa. Through this partnership, participants took part in a Digital Inclusion and Work Readiness Program that introduced them to coding fundamentals using the Python programming language.
In addition to technical exposure, the program included critical work readiness training—covering workplace ethics, professional communication, interview preparation, and how to craft a strong, competitive CV. This holistic approach ensures that participants are not only digitally aware but also prepared to navigate the job market with confidence.
Unlocking Career Pathways in the Digital Economy
The training sessions were engaging, informative, and eye-opening. Participants were introduced to a wide range of in-demand careers in the digital space, including:
- Software Development
- Data Analysis
- Cybersecurity
- Web Development
- IT Support and Networking
For many, these careers once felt distant and unattainable. However, this introductory experience helped demystify the tech industry and showed that these opportunities are within reach with the right mindset, access, and continued learning.

What stood out the most was learning about the wide range of career opportunities in tech, from software development and data analysis to cybersecurity and beyond. It opened my eyes to possibilities I had never fully considered before.”
